Communication that leads to meaningful connection and understanding.

Good communication isn’t about saying more. It’s about helping people understand:

Why does this matter?
What do I need to know?
What do I need to do next?

Parish renewal calls us all to communicate simply, consistently, and intentionally.

Principles

Communicate simply and consistently (one parish voice)

Explain the “why” before the details

Offer clear approaches that lead to connection

Principles in Action

We lead with purpose: we explain why it matters before how it works.

We use plain language that a newcomer can understand.

We avoid insider language, acronyms and assumptions that exclude people.

We use digital tools to promote and support encounter; not just announcements.

We communicate less but use various ‘tools’ to reach all parishioners

We don’t overwhelm people with too much information.

We repeat key messages consistently across channels and ministries.

We invite respectful questions, conversation and constructive conflict

We don’t rely on hints or assumptions.

We respect people’s time by being concise, accurate and timely.

Reflection

  • When have you felt confused by parish communication?
  • What makes a parish message easy to understand?
  • Do we sometimes communicate more information than people actually need?
  • Are we communicating with people or simply communicating at them?
  • How can our communication help people move toward connection and encounter?

Before you send your next ministry communication or create an event poster, ask: “If I knew nothing about this parish, would I understand this?”

If the answer is no, make it clearer.
